Wisdom & Why You Want It
Happy is the person who finds me. And the person who gains understanding and insight. For my profit is better than the profit of silver. And my gain is better than fine gold. And I am more precious than rubies; and nothing you can wish for compares with me. Long life is in my right hand. In my left hand are riches and honor. My ways are highways of pleasantness and favor. And all my paths are peace. I am a tree of life to those who take hold of me. And happy is everyone who holds me tightly (adapted from Proverbs 2).
Who am I? I AM WISDOM!
Sounds like a pretty nice life, doesn’t it? Wisdom refers to the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment. This is what it means to be wise. And wisdom does not come from your intellect. It comes from a deep knowing within you that is your connection to God/Spirit.
Everyone knows that King Solomon was the wisest man on Earth. Why? Because when he was given the opportunity to receive anything he wanted from God, he asked for wisdom. He didn’t ask for riches, but he asked for wisdom. And of course, all the riches of the world came to King Solomon from this wisdom.
In many places in Proverbs, it refers to the Spirit of Wisdom. For me, this is exciting because I can simply ask the Spirit of Wisdom to come to me and lay her spirit over me. You can do the same thing as you honor God and keep checking in to discover His instructions for you (aka, use your intuition and listen to the still quiet voice within your heart).
“Do not turn away from her (Wisdom) and she will guard and protect you. Love her and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is: Get wisdom! And with all your acquiring, get understanding. Prize wisdom and she will exalt you. She will honor you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a garland of grace; She will present you with a crown of beauty and glory.” Proverbs 4
When you honor, respect, and approach God with reverence, that is when you can ask for wisdom. Of course, we need to be still and quiet enough to hear God’s response back to us. Wisdom will come from the still quiet of your heart where you can hear God. We must train our hearts to listen in that stillness. We must open our spirits wide to expand our discernment. Then, we can pass it along to our children and their children.
Wisdom is how we rule, reign, and take dominion over our lives. And we must keep seeking it like a person who would seek silver or gold. Then we will discover reverence and honor of God, and discover wisdom.
As we bind mercy, kindness, and truth around our neck, writing them on the tablet of our heart; not relying on our own insight and understanding, but on God’s wisdom, then we will find her. We are to guard her, for she is our life!
What can you implement today as a regular practice to acquire wisdom? Daily reading, God’s word, prayers, stillness, and meditation, ask the Spirit of Wisdom to come to you. These are just a few examples. But I invite you to choose something and implement it as a regular practice in your life! Wisdom is ours for the asking and seeking.
